The tarot is more than a deck of cards — it’s a symbolic map of our lives. Each of the 22 Major Arcana cards represents an archetype and a stage of the Hero’s Journey.
In this second card of the Major Arcana, I explore The Musician archetype and symbolism. I bring in aspects of my own life as examples. I invite you, as you learn about The Magician, to think about times in your own life when you have felt like The Magician represented those moments.
As I create these posts, I include a timelapse drawing inspired by the filming I do for each card. I take a still image and turn that into a represenative image of the card, based on a nature scene as much as possible.

The Magician in Tarot: A Card of Manifestation
This series began with a new adventure: the start of a new Hero’s Journey. It was a leap of faith. We're on the adventure and now we meet The Magician.
On the Rider–Waite–Smith deck, The Magician has all the elements before him:

Air, symbolized by the Sword

Fire, in the Wand
He becomes the alchemist, using the four elements to transmute them into the 5th element, “ether,” raising his wand to channel energy from the heavens.
If you are familiar with energy healing, you’ll know that the right hand is the sender of action (positive energy), and the left hand is the receiver (negative energy). The Magician's right hand is sending energy from above, and his left hand grounds it to the earth — creating a bridge between heaven and earth.
My Personal Journey with The Magician
The Magician reminds us that we already have the tools within us to create the reality we want. That infinity symbol above his head? It shows us that there are infinite possibilities when we fuse spiritual and physical reality.
There was a time when I had been studying the tarot and using the cards personally for years. My spiritual journey dramatically changed in the summer of 2024 when many personal trials entered my life — family challenges, the illness of beloved pets, and personal tragedy. My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, one of my young cats was diagnosed with heart failure, a dear friend's son was killed in a car accident, another of my cats was in some kind of skirmish resulting in infection, Hurricane Helene affected my area in Western North Carolina, among other things, happening within a few months of each other.
I looked to the cards for their guidance and wisdom, and as a result, I knew I would share the tarot with others so that they might benefit in the ways that I have.
Since I made that decision, things have fallen into alignment, and I’m manifesting a life that is closer to the reality I want to create — physically, emotionally, mentally, financially, and spiritually.
That’s the Magician’s gift: showing me that everything I need is already here, already within me. All I have to do is trust it, use it, and channel it into form.
The Magician's Chakra Connections
The Magician has a few different chakra connections. In a reading, any one of these connections may stand out more, depending on nearby cards.
- The Palm Chakras, grounding us while connecting us to spirit. The palms are minor chakras, but they are able to concentrate energy, particularly healing energy.
- Crown Chakra — receiving wisdom and guidance from the divine. As above, so below.
- Throat Chakra — speaking into existence that which we wish to manifest.
