Starting the Meditation
Before you begin, ensure that you will not be disturbed. Gently check that your spine is straight and that you’re sitting comfortably. Be kind to yourself and open the mind to a state of curiosity.
As you progress through this meditation, it’s okay to have thoughts – they will come! Watch as they enter your mind, and then gently let them go. Bring your gentle, nonjudgmental attention back to this meditation when you find your thoughts have taken you elsewhere.Â
Let go of expectations and allow yourself to settle into this moment. This meditation.Â
Close your eyes, or close them halfway, with a soft, unfocused gaze.Â
Bring your awareness to your breathing. Notice the rise and fall of your chest, the natural rhythm of your breathing. Sit with your breath for a few moments.
Breathe in, deeply, first into your belly and then into your chest. Inhale as much as you can.Â
Slowly begin to release the air, starting with your chest, then your belly.Â
Breathe in, deeply, into your belly. Then your chest. Inhale as much as you can until you can expand your chest cavity no more.
Slowly begin to release the air, starting with your chest, then your belly.Â
Breathe in once more, deeply, through your nostrils, into your belly. Then expand your chest as much as you can.
Slowly breathe out, breathing through the mouth. Release the air from your lungs first, followed by the air in your belly.
Close your mouth, and breathe normally through your nose for a few breaths.
Beginning at the top of your head, imagine the muscles all around your head relaxing. Relax your forehead so that it is soft. Soften your eyebrows. Your ears.Â
Move your attention to your nose, relaxing all the muscles around it. Now your cheeks: relax them under your eyes, and expand this relaxation to your jaw. Soften your lips.
Now relax the muscles in the front of your neck, and bring your awareness to the back of your neck and relax all the muscles connecting your neck to your shoulders. Gently move your head side to side as needed.Â
Move to your shoulders and soften them, along with the muscles at the top of your back. Move to your middle back and relax, going down, down, to the base of your spine, relaxing all those muscles as you go.
Bring your gentle attention back to your shoulders. Move down both arms, relaxing the muscles at the top, now to your forearms, wrists, hands and fingers, consciously relaxing every muscle along the way.
Move toward your chest, becoming aware once again of its rise and fall as you breathe. In and out.
Now relax your belly muscles, and send this relaxation down to your lower abdomen. Relax your thighs, your knees, your calves…relax your ankles, feet, and toes. Breathe gently.
Visualizing
Now envision yourself standing in the forest. You’re surrounded by large old growth trees with bright green pines, maples, and oak. The ground is soft beneath your bare feet. The sun streams in through the thick growth, and beads of water on the leaves and ground glisten with light. You hear gentle wind and birdsong in the distance. You are protected and rooted in this spot. Breathe and let your senses take in all the beauty and peace.
Beneath your feet, you feel a certain amount of warmth. It is the energy coming from the center of the earth. This powerful red energy comes up through the ground into your feet. You feel this warmth move up your ankles, calves, thighs and to your lower spine.Â
Â
With this warm, red energy, you engage the root lock: mula bandha. The energy of your root chakra glows red. As this energy builds, this red light begins to grow. It grows and expands until your entire body is contained within this powerful, protective red light.Â
Breathe. With the root lock engaged, send this warm energy up your spine, touching your belly, heart, throat, third eye and crown. Watch as this earth energy exits the top of your head, up into the sky, the universe. Release the root lock.
With your next inhale, pull this universal energy back down. Exhale as you send this energy down to the top of your head, then your third eye. Move down to your throat, your heart, your belly, and back to the root of your spine. Breathe in and out for a few moments and let this universal energy linger there, merging with the existing red light, and strengthening the protective red shield of light surrounding your body.
Send this warm, red energy back down to the earth, infusing the earth field with universal energy.Â
Feel the warmth of the earth beneath your feet. Once again, bring the energy up from the center of the earth to your feet. Pull up this warm, radiant energy up through your ankles, legs, and lower spine. Let the energy build there for a few moments.
Engage the root lock. Send this energy up your spine, and watch as it touches your belly, your heart, throat, third eye and top of your head. Observe as this red energy exits to the sky, and to the universe.
Inhale as you pull energy down from the universe, to the top of your head, then to your third eye, throat, belly and lower spine. Exhale as you continue to send this energy down through your feet, back to the earth. Release the root lock.
Engage the root lock once again. Inhale and pull the energy up from the earth to your feet, your legs and spine. Hold the root lock and exhale, sending the energy up your spine. Up, up and through the top of your head to the universe. Release the root lock.Â
Engage the root lock and inhale, pulling universal energy down to the top of your head. Send it to your third eye, throat, heart, belly and lower spine. Exhale and send the energy down and back to the earth. Release the root lock.
Inhale and engage the root lock, and continue to pull energy up from the earth to your lower spine. With the root lock engaged, exhale and send the energy up your spine, out through your head to the universe. Release the root lock.
On the next inhale, engage the root lock, and pull universal energy down your spine to your root chakra. Exhale and send the energy back to the earth. Release the root lock. Continue engaging the root lock and sending energy up and down your spine as you breathe for the next few minutes.Â
